Things to do in Berkeley

Things to do in San Francisco

  • "So I married an axe murderer" tour. It was filmed in SF, we did a walking tour of the city and hit as many spots as we could. It made us pass by a lot of interesting places in town.
  • Cable Car museum
  • Columbarium_of_San_Francisco
  • Lombard St ("the crookedest [most winding] street in world.")
  • Mount Diablo; if you drive to the top, it's an absolutely gorgeous view of practically the whole Bay Area.
  • a google map (link could break in the future, sorry) of mostly bars around sf:
  • Sit in Dolores Park with a frisbee and beverages on a sunny day! Ironic tshirt encourged but not required.
  • Yoda
  • Chinatown (always bring the visitor into an herbalist store)
  • Have a Mission Burrito (burritos were invented in SF, in the Mission)
  • Parrots are a great point, but the watching of the documentary is almost required to truly appreciate the parrots: http://www.wildparrotsfilm.com/
  • Weekend Ferry Plaza farmers market and crafts fair
  • the walrus/seal/whatevers at the pier at north beach
  • the chocolate cafe on fillmore is (bitter)sweet and there's nice shopping
  • the bombay ice creamery in the mission is genius
  • memphis minnie's makes a mean brisket and there are neat t-shirt shops nearby and (the woman @ international cafe may give you a free donut or some lip).
  • some of us want to go tree climbing in san francisco park.

Things to do in other places around the bay area

  • Maybe Lake Merrit in Oakland?  I have a soft spot for downtown Oakland.  It's less touristy than SF.
  • the greatest dim sum outside of asia: koi palace in daly city.
  • Backpacking: Henry Coe park (2 hrs south) is beautiful, empty backcountry. Big Sur is fantastic with ocean views but often closed for fires. Summer hiking up in the Sierras is a few hours northwest with breathtaking views and good water availability.
  • Napa and Sonoma Valleys (known for their vineyards and beautiful scenery) are an hour and a half north
