CSGSA Grad Lounge

The Grad Lounge is located on the 3rd floor of Soda Hall, in room 347. Access is card key restricted to grad students, staff and faculty.

Lounge Remodeling

The lounge has been in a state of remodeling since early 2008, the plan is to complete the project by early 2009. It currently houses a fully operational Birkball table which is regularly played by a few groups of grads; and a sofa set with coffee table. The lounge used to house the Buyers' Club and was a general storage room for the CSGSA. A few officers and faculty decided that the room could be better used as a proper lounge with a very large TV, game console system, board games, better seating, repainting and decorating. The Dept will pay for an electrician to install new lights, the CSGSA will pay for extra furniture, TV, console, lights and paint. Stay tuned for further updates here. Please contact Ben if you have comments or concerns.

Design

The image board for the new lounge design (click to see slightly larger images):

You can see the floor plan, which shows (relative the door as you enter the room) the TV on a stand to the right, the birkball table to the left with sofas in between it and the TV, a bar attached to the wall (with stools underneath) to the sharp left, and four lamps in the four corners. Also are shown track lights/down lights to replace the current upward-directed fluorescent lights.

We hope to get the smaller-sized down/drop lights used in Soda 551 (the ParLab's grad lounge), which won't reflect quite as much off the orange ceiling.

We are getting a large "CSGSA" logo etched out of black plastic to put on the wall, using the BiD's laser etcher.

Updates

We're doing a final push for early 2009. Here's what's new:

  • Fri May 22: We're almost done getting the first round of Xbox360 games (see below). We're done with light fixtures (ceiling light upgrades are postponed indefinitely), and all remodeling except for the laser-etched logo. Board games still to come.
  • Wed Apr 8: The lounge has changed quite a bit. We now have: the 50" plasma installed and secured, the Xbox360 installed and secured (thanks MS!), the bar table and stools, ascending shelves above the birkball table, picture frame hanging above the TV, and a red wall clock behind the door. Xbox360 hardware including rock band is shipping now. We'll order more Xbox and board games, and a receiver+speaker system, soon!
  • Wed Apr 8: Two of the five letters have been etched. Waiting on the remaining three plastic sheets to flatten out in the sun.
  • Thu Mar 19: The TV has been ordered, the Xbox from MS has arrived; they will be installed within 2 weeks.
  • Wed Mar 18: The officers held a logo competition for the lounge logo. The winning entry was designed by Adrian:

  • Wed Mar 4: We've put up the TV stands, floor lamps, put up 3 framed prints on the west wall (completing that wall) and the tiled mirrors on the north wall. Next we're ordering birkball shelves for the north wall, a bar table + 2 stools for the north west corner and clock for the south wall opposite the mirrors. The officers are designing/voting on a logo to be etched at the BiD for the east wall.
  • Wed Feb 18: We've cleaned out most of the large rubbish. A mockup showed that the floor plan (just uploaded, see description under the image boards above) should work. A 50" TV will be a good size for the room.
  • Wed Jan 28: We are done painting!
  • Sat Jan 24: First layer of paint added! Helpers were Ben Rubinstein, Serena Wu, Adrian Mettler, Blaine Nelson and Jacob Abernethy. That room is rather orange now...
  • Tue Jan 20: Microsoft is donating an Xbox360 to the lounge! It should arrive in about a week. We'll get Xbox live, rockband and other games.
  • Mon Jan 19: We're considering Moro Orange from Kelly-Moore for the ceiling and walls. A sample is up on the wall now, check it out and let us know what you think. Painting will go ahead Sat Jan 24. Image:MoroOrange.jpg
