Buyers' Club

From CSGSA

The items in the fridge and on the shelves in the Buyer's Club (508 Soda) are available for graduate students, but THEY ARE NOT FREE. At some time in the distant past, the CSGSA supplied the initial funding for these items, but now the system must be self supporting. There is an element of trust here -- please do not take items if you have not set up an account, and please do not take items without deducting them from your account. If the money coming in is not sufficient to cover the items being taken, the buyers' club will be discontinued.

Accounts

Money for all purchases is deducted from pre-paid accounts. Contact a member of the lounge committee to create a new account. Creating an account simply involves giving some money and choosing a password.

Buying an Item

Once you have an account, you are free to take any item from the fridge or the shelf, as long as you deduct the item from your account using the software on the PC in the lounge. Please deduct the item that you are actually taking, even if there are multiple items for the same price, as the database is used for inventory control.

After taking a beverage from the fridge, please replace it with the same or a similar item to ensure that we always have an ample supply of cold drinks. Also, feel free to transfer drinks from the shelf to the fridge if you notice that the fridge is running low.

For a list of items we stock, or to suggest additional items, see Buyers' Club items.

Adding Money to your Account

When your balance becomes low, please go see a member of the Lounge Committee in person to add more funds. They will only accept cash.

You may also add money to your Buyer's Club account using PayPal. Our address for PayPal payments is csgsa-lounge at cs (NOT eecs). We have a merchant account, so you can use a credit card. So we know which account to credit, please include your lounge login name as a message with the payment. Note that the fees PayPal charges (30¢ + 2.9%) will deducted from your payment (they charge them even if you pay from a bank account because they are jerks that way).

We used to have a script to handle PayPal payments automatically, but it seems to have completely succumbed to bit rot at this point (PayPal has changed their API or certificate or something so that it no longer works -- if you'd like to work on fixing this, we'd love help). We've now configured PayPal to send us an email when payments come in, so we should be able to credit them within a few days. Send us an email if you don't hear from us within a week.

Lounge Software

New GUI! Type what you want to buy in the quick add bar, and the list of items will filter according to your search. You can still use the item numbers as well. Some items have additional keywords that are not part of their item name (e.g. "coke" for "Sodas (assorted)"), so you should be able to find them easily.

The new software has you log in first, then add/remove items from your cart. The Checkout button commits the purchase and logs you out.

Please keep the lounge software running on the lounge PC at all times, and please keep the lounge PC on and logged in to the lounge user account. If this software is ever not running for some reason, you can restart it by running lounge_gui. If the lounge user on the lounge PC (communism.cs) is not logged in for some reason, contact a member of the lounge committee.

If you find any bugs or problems with this software, please report them to a member of the lounge committee. We also appreciate suggestions for improvement (but make no guarantees as to when or if they will be implemented).

A note on passwords: Your password for this software is stored encrypted, and it is never sent over the network in the clear. Nevertheless, we advise against using the same password here as for your login. Note that the new software doesn't yet have a change password feature. To change your password, you can still run the old lounge_user program from a terminal window.
